What Are Criminal Charges?

For more than 25 years, four crime types have comprised the majority of federal felonies and Class A misdemeanors: drugs, immigration, firearms and fraud, theft, or embezzlement. This trend continued throughout the year 2020 as these crimes accounted for nearly 86.4% of all cases reported to the Commission. Above all else were felonies sitting at 97.0% of cases reported.

Drugs were the second most common federal crime in the year 2020. There were roughly 16,829 total cases reported to the Commission which accounted for 26.1% of all cases. This is a decrease of about 3,564 cases or 17.5% from the previous year of 2019.

Immigration continues to be the most common federal crime as it was in 2020. It accounts for 41.1% of total cases which was an increase from 2019 totals. The 26,561 immigration cases only represented a 9.5% decrease from the 29,354 cases in 2019.

Firearms were the third most common federal offense in 2020. Approximately, 7,539 firearm cases were reported that accounting for 11.7% of all cases.

Fraud, theft, or embezzlement totaled out to 7.5% of all reported federal cases. Under this category, we see the largest percentage decrease among the four major crime types. The 2,793 case decrease was 24.5% lower than the number reported in 2019. A criminal charge is a formal accusation made by a government authority figure that asserts someone has committed a crime. The list of criminal charges extends beyond the four main types. Listed below are more common crimes:

  • Aggravated assault
  • Arson
  • Burglary
  • Conspiracy
  • Cyberbullying
  • Domestic violence
  • Hate crimes
  • Insurance fraud
  • Kidnapping
  • Shoplifting
  • Stalking
  • Vandalism

Again, the list is extensive and is not limited to the aforementioned crimes.
